Wearable: Swimsuit cleanning ocean

Wearable definition refers to technologies that are incorporated into the clothing and accessories which can comfortably be worn on the body meanwhile many tasks are performed. An example of this technology is a swimsuit that has been created to clean the ocean water.

A team of engineers at the University of California, Riverside is partnering with the Eray/Carbajo design firm to make an swimsuit that cleans ocean pollution: the SpongeSuit.

This invention won first place at RESHAPE’s 2015 Wearable Technology Competition, is made of a carbon-based material that repels water while absorbing harmful contaminants. The Sponge is derived from heated sucrose, a form of sugar and also it has a 3D printed structure.

It can absorb everything but water and hold up to 25 times its own weight. The SpongeSuit can be reused an average of 20 times before losing its absorbent qualities. Once it is saturated, the material will simply stop absorbing contaminants.
